This guide explains how to reach the government service. Use DAERA’s official service for the government transaction.
Decide whose account and business you need
Before signing in, identify whether you are accessing your own farm's information or acting for a client. DAERA says access requires authorisation and identity verification. A successful login and permission to view a particular business are therefore separate parts of the process.
Write down the service you intend to use and the relevant business reference. For example, the official entry page identifies the Single Application, Map Service and NIFAIS among its services. Select the service matching your actual task after gaining access; reaching the general login does not itself complete a transaction.
If you help a relative with office work, establish the correct authorised arrangement before entering account details. For client work, follow the agent instructions rather than sharing the farmer's sign-in information. DAERA explicitly asks users to keep their account details secure.
Individual farmer: follow the nidirect sequence
DAERA's nidirect instructions describe the following route: create an account online, verify identity at a DAERA Direct office, then log in to the verified account. The initial setup includes email verification and a memorable word. Keep the verification code for the identity appointment.
For the normal identity-document route, DAERA lists at least three documents: one from its first group and two from its second group. The combination must include photo identification and a document showing the address used for the account. Its guidance also describes an alternative arrangement using four Group Two documents when the normal combination is unavailable. Use the document lists on the linked page when assembling the originals.
Check the spelling of your name and the address before visiting. Where documents display an address, DAERA says it must match the account. Some listed evidence has document-age conditions, so choose it from the current list rather than relying on an old checklist saved on your computer.
After verification, return to the login route with the verified nidirect details. DAERA says the Customer ID is entered on first login. The service then displays the online services available to you. Keep the Customer ID distinguishable from the login name and verification code in your own administrative notes.
Individual farmer: Government Gateway route
DAERA also publishes a Government Gateway access guide, linked from the official entry page. Follow that route if you already use it, and read its own registration instructions if creating access. Do not apply the nidirect identity steps to a different sign-in route simply because both appear on the same landing page.
When you ask for help, state which route you used and where the process stopped. “I cannot log in” can mean that account authentication failed, that identity verification is incomplete or that the requested business is not available after authentication. Record the on-screen message accurately, without copying a password or security response into the support request.
If an old bookmark opens an unfamiliar or obsolete page, return to the official service entry above and select the appropriate route again. This is a practical navigation step: it keeps your starting point connected to DAERA's current instructions without guessing a replacement login address.
Agent access and nominations
DAERA directs agents to Government Gateway. Its current entry page also explains that some services support online agent nomination through the DAERA Customer Portal, while others still need the relevant authorisation form. Do not assume that a nomination automatically covers every service you intend to use.
The online nomination guidance describes the customer choosing services and an agent accepting or rejecting the nomination. The farmer and agent can then review their respective nomination information. Use that official guidance for the specific service and retain the resulting authorisation reference in your business administration file.
Prepare the business identity, required service and agent details before discussing a missing permission with DAERA. Check that you are working in the intended client's context before entering or submitting information. If several clients have similar trading names, use their official references to distinguish them.
Typical problems and the correct help route
| Problem | Next action |
|---|---|
| nidirect registration or sign-in fails | Use nidirect account support |
| Identity verification is unfinished | Follow DAERA's nidirect verification instructions |
| You can log in but cannot see the intended service | Contact DAERA about service access and authorisation |
| Agent cannot view a client | Review the service-specific nomination or authorisation route |
| Customer ID is being confused with a password | Return to the instructions for your actual account route |
Keep your spray records in one place. Free to start.
nidirect publishes a dedicated support contact for registration and sign-in problems. DAERA's main service page gives its own regional-office contact route for questions about applications within DAERA Online Services. Send the issue to the relevant service rather than repeatedly creating new accounts.
Before making contact, prepare a short description: farmer or agent, account route, intended service, stage reached and exact error wording. Include a safe contact address and any relevant business reference requested by the authority. Keep passwords, memorable-word characters and other security responses out of email.
Finish the official task and retain the result
After opening the intended service, read its instructions for saving, checking and submitting the transaction. Keep the confirmation produced by that service and distinguish it from a draft or an unfinished form. If no confirmation appears, resolve the status through the official service rather than assuming that leaving the page completed the work.
For spray-record administration, keep the authority's transaction separately identifiable from your application diary. A login confirmation is not a treatment record, and a completed treatment entry is not evidence that you submitted a separate government form. Organise the two under clear document names and references.
DAERA publishes a separate spray-record workbook and guidance, while the digital spray records guide explains Northern Ireland's record-format timetable. These are different tasks from gaining access to the portal. The official service remains where you carry out the government transaction.
Prepare a support request without exposing security information
Make a short issue log before contacting support. Include the date, device type, account route, service selected and stage at which progress stopped. Transcribe the error text and explain whether you reached the business-selection screen. If the problem appears after authentication, describe that distinction explicitly instead of repeatedly resetting a password.
For an appointment concerning identity evidence, compare the name and address on the selected documents with the details used for registration. DAERA's guide lists current passports and driving licences among Group One evidence and identifies several categories of Group Two evidence. It also gives separate age limits for particular financial or household documents. Keep those details tied to the actual list rather than assuming that any envelope displaying your address will suffice.
If a family member manages correspondence for the business, confirm which contact details belong to the account holder and which belong to the business. Ask DAERA to resolve an authorisation issue through its official route. Avoid opening duplicate identities simply to see whether a different spelling reveals the missing service.
Keep a clear administrative handover
In an office handover, record the intended task, business reference, application status and location of the official confirmation. Describe the account route without writing down passwords or memorable-word responses. A successor needs to understand the work and the authorisation arrangement, rather than inherit another person's secret authentication information.
For agent work, keep the nomination's service scope distinguishable from the wider client relationship. DAERA's entry page expressly says some services still use the relevant authorisation form. A client may therefore be visible for one task while another requires its own access arrangement.
After resolving an access problem, close the issue log with the action taken and the next step in the official service. File any spray-record work separately so an administrative login problem does not become an unexplained gap in the treatment diary.
Choose identity documents from the actual list
DAERA's Group One list includes a current passport, biometric residence permit, qualifying driving licence, original birth certificate and original adoption certificate. Its Group Two list includes a work permit or visa, marriage or civil-partnership certificate, firearms licence, electoral ID and a Translink Senior SmartPass, among other evidence. Read the complete official list when assembling your own combination.
For evidence that carries an age limit, check the issue date before travelling. A statement, addressed payslip, mortgage document or rates demand belongs to its own listed category; do not assume all evidence has the same validity window. Ask the official support contact about an unusual document rather than substituting an unlisted item.
Use a separate diagnostic note for repeated failures, listing the sequence of attempts and the eventual resolution.
