The path has distinct stages: identify the appropriate course, obtain the qualification evidence, apply to DAFM and retain the approval carrying your PU number. Keep the training certificate, the application acknowledgement and the final registration outcome as separately identifiable documents. DAFM’s August 2026 guide describes the application and approval sequence.
Pesticide certification training: choose the award for your actual spraying work
DAFM recognises QQI 5N1797 for boom sprayers and QQI 5N0731 for handheld sprayers. Its list includes City & Guilds PA1 with PA2a for boom application, or PA1 with PA6 for handheld application, as well as PA1 with another PA module appropriate to the user’s work.
| Intended method | Examples on DAFM’s recognised list |
|---|---|
| Boom sprayer | QQI 5N1797; City & Guilds PA1 plus PA2a |
| Handheld sprayer | QQI 5N0731; City & Guilds PA1 plus PA6 |
| Other application equipment | An appropriate listed route matched to that use |
These are examples from the official list, rather than a recommendation to buy a particular course. DAFM also lists Teagasc pesticide-application qualifications and Lantra routes, including vehicle-mounted boom, handheld equipment and certain other application methods.
Before booking, describe the work to the provider in ordinary terms: farm boom application, knapsack use around a site, orchard work or another specific method. Ask the provider to identify the exact award and practical assessment that address that work. Keep their written answer with the course information so your registration file reflects the training actually undertaken.
Ask what the booking includes
Use DAFM’s linked provider document as your starting point for enquiries. Request the current timetable, location, award title, assessment arrangements and documents supplied after successful completion. Keep the quotation separate from the qualification certificate. An attendance message may help organise your booking, but the registration application needs the relevant qualification evidence described by DAFM.
Prepare a booking checklist that includes prerequisites, classroom arrangements, equipment-specific practice, assessment date, resit procedure and how the result reaches you. These are questions to settle with the chosen provider; they are not nationally fixed fees or course lengths. Do not plan the first professional application around an assumed certificate-delivery date that the provider has not confirmed.
For employees, identify whose name will appear on the award. Put the attendee’s own contact details in the training file and retain the employer’s purchasing paperwork elsewhere. This makes it easier to retrieve the qualification when the employee changes role or when someone other than the purchaser prepares the DAFM application.
Recover evidence from an older Teagasc qualification
DAFM directs former Teagasc students who are unsure whether their qualification is suitable to the Teagasc pesticide-training enquiry route. Teagasc provides a SUD query form for questions about its past training. People trained by another organisation are directed back to their original trainer.
Find the original award, transcript or correspondence before making the enquiry. Identify the college or training centre, course name and approximate attendance period from your own records. Explain which application method you need to register for. Keep the response with the historical certificate so the person assembling the application can see the relationship between the old wording and the qualification being claimed.
Teagasc’s training page says it is not currently offering pesticide-use training outside its full-time programmes. It points users to DAFM’s list of outside training providers. Follow those published routes rather than assuming that a locally remembered short course is still open for enrolment.
Prepare your DAFM registration file
The August 2026 registration guide asks applicants to have their PPS number, email address and mobile number available. For current DAFM clients it describes the Agfood route and selecting the Sustainable Use Directive System, then Pesticide User. It also provides a separate external route for non-DAFM clients.
Use the DAFM login guide when access itself is the obstacle. Keep an access-recovery enquiry separate from an enquiry about the suitability of your course. Write down the precise task and unresolved step before contacting the department: account sign-in, missing qualification evidence or an application already under assessment.
DAFM’s instructions say to select the highest relevant qualification from the course list. Where the relevant course is absent, choose Other and enter the details. Attach a copy of each relevant qualification, read the terms and submit through the official application. Registered pesticide advisers are instructed to include their PA status and number.
Check the uploaded copy for legibility and completeness. Preserve the identifier exactly as shown, including letters and leading zeroes where applicable. Use a filename that makes the document recognisable without opening it. Keep any explanatory note beside the attachment rather than editing the certificate to make it resemble a different award.
Wait for the approval, then file the PU number
DAFM’s acknowledgement email includes a SUDS Tracking Reference Number. Its guide says applications are reviewed and that the department can seek further qualification information. The approval email confirms inclusion on the professional-user register and supplies a PU number; a rejected application is accompanied by appeal information.
Treat the tracking reference as the reference for an application in progress. When approval arrives, add the PU number to the operator’s file and retain the message establishing it. Keep both records, so later correspondence can refer either to the application history or the completed registration.
A new DAFM client needs customer registration before processing can proceed. If asked for that customer registration form, file the request and your response with the application. A completed course does not remove that administrative step.
Validity, renewal and continuing training
The operative Irish provision is regulation 5 of SI 155/2012 as substituted by SI 438/2019. It requires a professional user to be entered in the register, hold the specified training certificate and comply with additional training requirements determined by the Minister. The amendment index identifies the 2019 substitution.
That provision does not set a fixed number of years after which every PU registration automatically expires. It allows removal from the register where the person ceases to be a professional user, fails to comply with additional training requirements, or has a qualifying conviction concerning pesticide misuse or water pollution. Keep registration status and continuing training together when reviewing your operator file.
For an existing registered operator asking about renewal, start with DAFM’s additional-training page and any instruction sent to you by the department. If your circumstances or application method have changed, send a focused enquiry to the pesticide-registration contact in the August 2026 guide, identifying your PU number and the question. Do not purchase an unrelated renewal course simply because another country uses a recurring licence system.
DAFM’s additional-training section provides periodic material on water protection and the Sustainable Use Directive, including linked articles and information for professional users. Keep a dated note of the material or training you complete, together with any specific department correspondence about your registration.
Keep the operator and equipment evidence distinct
Organise a people file for qualifications and PU approvals, and an equipment file for the sprayer’s identification and inspection documents. This is an administrative arrangement for retrieving different evidence without confusing the applying person with the machine used. The sprayer-testing guide explains the equipment route separately.
When several people share a farm diary, assign responsibility for updating the operator list after an approval arrives. Verify the name against the person who did the application before copying their identity into a spray record. Keep a contractor’s operator evidence distinguishable from the customer’s account details.
Keep your spray records in one place. Free to start.
For a new employee, work through a practical document handover: locate the award, locate the approval, find the applicable method and identify where future DAFM correspondence will be filed. Make the same retrieval exercise part of an office handover when a colleague who administered training leaves the business.
Turn the qualification into a usable working record
Prepare the treatment-record process before the first job. Decide where the operator will capture the date, location and product information, who checks an incomplete report and how a correction is returned to the original operator. The professional-user records guide and sheet instructions cover that next stage.
Use a clearly marked practice entry while training someone in your office workflow. Leave genuine product choices and application conditions to the actual authorised job. Inspect the saved or printed output with the trainee so they can distinguish an application date from a training date and a PU identifier from a product identifier.
Compare the recognised routes without mixing award names
DAFM’s list contains qualifications from different awarding arrangements. Its Lantra entries include Safe Use of Pesticides (PA1) with Vehicle Mounted Boom Sprayer (PA2), and PA1 with Hand Held Equipment (PA6). Another Lantra entry covers granular, pesticide-plug, stem-injection and trailed-wick applications. Its City & Guilds list also includes PA1 with another PA module appropriate to the user’s application.
When requesting a quotation, copy the full relevant award description into your enquiry. Ask the provider to explain the practical module and resulting certificate. Preserve the distinction between a general safe-use component and the equipment-specific component, particularly if your existing paperwork records them on different documents.
For orchard, vineyard, nursery or amenity work, describe the machine and method rather than requesting a generic “spraying licence.” Ask how the proposed qualification corresponds to that method. If an employer operates several kinds of equipment, prepare a role-by-method table before organising training bookings. A person’s experience with one machine should not be used as a substitute for establishing the evidence needed for another registration claim.
PA6A and PA6AW: the knapsack and near-water modules
PA6A is the City & Guilds NPTC module for a hand-held applicator, the knapsack sprayer, and PA6AW is the hand-held module for work near water. Check the module name on your certificate against the sprayer you actually use, and keep the certificate with your DAFM registration file. For spraying near a watercourse, ask the training provider which module your work needs and put the answer in your training log.
Booking a PA1 and PA6 spraying course online or near you
A pesticide license course, a pesticide certification course or a pesticide safety course in Ireland is one of the awards on DAFM’s list of recognised qualifications and training providers. "PA1 and PA2 courses" and a "PA1 PA6 spraying course" are the boom and handheld awards from the table above, not two separate licences. The same applies to a herbicide spraying course, a herbicide applicator course, a sprayer training course for farmers or a weed killer spraying certificate: choose the award for your sprayer.
Ask each provider whether its pesticide courses run online, in a classroom or mixed, and where the practical assessment for a PA6 spraying course near you takes place. Ask what the course costs and get the price in writing. The booking questions above cover the rest.
In Irish terms, a licensed or certified pesticide applicator, a licensed herbicide applicator or a glyphosate applicator is a registered professional user who holds the training certificate for the equipment used. For integrated pest management courses or aluminium phosphide training courses, name the topic in your enquiry and ask the provider which listed award covers it.
Prepare for the assessment administration
Ask the provider what identification, prior certificates and practical equipment information to bring. Confirm the assessment location and contact person from the booking correspondence. If accessibility, language or scheduling arrangements matter, raise them before enrolment so the provider can explain the available arrangements.
Keep the course attendance, assessment outcome and certificate-delivery stages identifiable in your diary. Request a written explanation of how an unsuccessful or incomplete assessment is handled. Record any agreed follow-up without describing a booked assessment as a qualification already obtained.
For a business paying on behalf of staff, separate the purchase order and invoice from the individual’s award. Name the intended recipient when arranging certificate delivery. Give the attendee a copy of the resulting document and retain the business copy in the appropriate people file, according to your own document arrangements.
Before uploading a scanned certificate, check sharpness, complete margins, correct orientation and the presence of all relevant pages. Avoid compressing a file until the qualification identifier becomes unreadable. Compare the final attachment with the original award rather than relying on an automatic filename or phone-gallery preview.
Resolve a certificate-name or course-code discrepancy
If an older document uses different wording from a current course list, preserve both descriptions in your enquiry. DAFM’s guide provides the Other option for a relevant qualification absent from the selector, while Teagasc offers a query route for its former students. Use the appropriate published route to establish the evidence instead of silently changing the course name.
Prepare a short chronology: where you trained, the award shown on the document, any subsequent training and the application method now intended. Attach the supporting material requested by the organisation handling the query. Retain the answer with the original qualification so the next administrator does not have to ask the same question again.
For a missing document from a non-Teagasc provider, Teagasc directs the trainee to the original trainer. Start with that organisation’s records rather than asking Teagasc to certify training it did not deliver.
Build a continuing-training log around real evidence
DAFM’s additional-training page links information and learning material about water protection and sustainable use. Its role is distinct from the original award list. Use a personal log to record the title, organiser or publisher, date completed and evidence retained for material you actually undertake.
Do not mark a linked article as completed simply because its address was copied into a folder. Record what you read or attended and any practical action you intend to take. Where a department instruction specifies an additional requirement, preserve that instruction with the evidence showing your response.
During an annual office review of your own choosing, inspect the operator’s registered details, method of work, qualification location and outstanding correspondence. This review is an administrative practice, not a newly asserted statutory renewal date. Give an unresolved question a named owner and a route for obtaining an answer.
Explain the distinction to a new operator
Walk the person through a sample document pack containing an award, a submission acknowledgement, an approval and an application record. Ask them to identify which document establishes training, which records an application in progress and which supplies the PU identifier. Then locate the machine certificate separately.
Use a clearly marked demonstration folder rather than a live application when teaching the office process. Show how an entry moves from a plan to an actual treatment, how an uncertain quantity is clarified and where the source response is retained. Finish with a retrieval exercise from the operator’s own name and method of application.
For a supervisor arranging cover during holidays, leave a concise responsibility list: who can locate the qualification, who monitors DAFM correspondence and who checks an incomplete spray report. That handover helps keep training administration connected to the people doing the work without treating the farm’s general account as everybody’s professional-user record.
